Show Me the (Free) Money

I have compiled a complete list of classroom and education grants for teachers with deadlines in spring of 2019. These grants range from scholarships for current teachers and professional development grants, to mini grants for classroom supplies.


I use to think that teachers were fated to give up half their paycheck to pay for classroom resources and teaching tools...until I discovered the availability of education grants. To save you time, energy, and (hopefully!) money, here is a complete list of free money just waiting to be taken.



James Madison Fellowship Program

Deadline: March 6

Prize: $24,000

Description: This scholarship for a graduate student who desires to be outstanding secondary history teacher.

ILA Regie Routman Teacher Recognition Grant

Deadline: March 15

Prize: $2,500

Description: Dedicated to improving and enriching the teaching and learning of purposeful reading and writing across the curriculum.

Specific Requirements: K-8 U.S. teacher at a school with greater than 60% free or reduced lunch

*not for commercial programs or technology hardware

Lemelson MIT InvenTeams Grant

Deadline: April 8

Prize: Up to $10,000

Description: Grant for high school students, educators, and mentors that invent technological solutions to real-world problems.

AFCEA STEM Teacher Graduate Scholarship

Deadline: April 12

Prize: $2,500

Description: Scholarship for students who are actively pursuing a graduate degree or credential/licensure for the purpose of teaching STEM.

Specific Requirements: U.S. citizen who is living in the U.S., attending an accredited U.S. college or university, and who is taking at least two semester-equivalent classes at the time of application.

ACS-Hach High School Chemistry Classroom Grant

Deadline: April 14

Prize: Up to $1,500

Description: Grant that may be used to purchase/supplement laboratory equipment and supplies, teaching materials, professional development opportunities, field studies, and outreach events.

Specific Requirements: High school chemistry teacher in the U.S. or U.S. territory

McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation Teacher Development Grant

Deadline: April 15 (or until they have received 350 submissions)

Prize: Up to $10,000 per year for three years

Description: Supports small teams of teachers in the integration of new strategies that encourage critical thinking.

McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation Academic Enrichment Grant

Deadline: April 15 (or until they have received 350 submissions)

Prize: Up to $10,000 per year for three years

Description: Funds in-class and extra-curricular programs for low-income students.

Specific Requirements: This grant is open to anyone who is employed by a school or non-profit organization.

Toshiba America Foundation Grant

Deadline: Multiple Deadlines [May 1 for requests greater than $5,000]

Other Deadlines: For grades K-5 (less than $1,000) 10/1 Grades 6-12 (less than $5,000) 3/1, 6/1, 9/1, Grades 6-12 (more than $5,000) 5/1, 11/1

Prize: Variable

Description: Grant funds problem based learning activities. See specifics on website (not for use to purchase computers, tablets, smartboards, etc.)

Verizon Technology Teacher Grant

Deadline: May 21

Prize: $1,000

Description: Grant money may be used towards the purchase of Virtual Reality equipment to use in the classroom. Teachers must submit a lesson plan explaining how the equipment would be used to meet course objectives.
